Castel Sismondo

The Malatesta Family’s fortress of power

The Malatesta family dominated Rimini from 1295 to 1528. The Sismondo Castle was built in the 15th Century according to the wishes of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta.

Of the old structure only the central nucleus remains. The “official” end was decreed in 1446. The Castle was designed to act as a palce and a fortress at the same time, as a suitable seat for the court and the garrison, and as a symbol of power and supremacy over the city of Rimini.

For Sigismondo the castle was a visual representation of his fortress of power according to a typical Medieval concept. Sigismondo died in his beloved castle on 9th October 1468.
